What's Eating Gilbert Grape - Review

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108550/
What's Eating Gilbert Grape is a simple story about a person caught in between who they are and who they want to become. Starring Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, Gilbert Grape explores the circumstances that sometimes hold people in a state of limbo as they try to grow up (in Gilbert's case being the patriarch of his family at the age of 17). Watch our review below to see what we thought of this timeless drama 20 years after its release.

Hick - Review

Originally a semi-autobiographical novel by Andrea Portes, Hick is the story of a 13 year old girl who runs away from home.  It includes a loaded cast (Chloe Grace Moretz, Blake Lively, and Alec Baldwin) and a solid soundtrack (with songs by Bob Dylan and Patsy Cline among many others), Hick is a movie with a lot going for it on paper.  However, its 5% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes tells a totally different story.  Watch our review to see how we felt it played out on screen!

Queue It:
  • If you're looking for a role that pushed Chloe Grace Moretz out of the mold
  • If you're a fan of coming of age stories
  • If you're looking for a movie that pushes your emotional viewing limits
  •
Screw It:
  • If an over sexualized 13 year old makes you feel really uncomfortable
  • If you're looking for something with an interesting plot

The tension between youthfulness and maturity is a central theme addressed in Prince Avalanche. Set in the late 1980's on a lonely Texas highway, Prince Avalanche is a stripped down look at the bonds and struggles of two highway workers who are at different stages in their lives. See our thoughts on this Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch movie in the video and written review below.

Troll Hunter - Review

In mainstream American cinema, Norway is known for very few things including being a filming location for The Empire Strikes Back.  However, every few years a Norwegian film gains some traction in the US market and finds a home in the hearts of the American people.  This is just what Troll Hunter did.  Shot in a "found footage" mockumentary style and presented on Netflix in its native Norwegian, Troll Hunter is a masterfully weaved tale of government conspiracy and fairy tales.

Hot Rod - Review

After over two years of cutting his teeth on SNL, Hot Rod introduced the cinema world to Andy Samberg. Included with Samberg in the loaded cast is Will Arnett, Bill Hader, Isla Fisher and Danny McBride. Released a few years after Napolean Dynamite, the style and humor is hard not to compare between the two films. Despite this Hot Rod finds a way to stand out.

The History of Future Folk - Review

Touting an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, The History of Future Folk is a thoughtful and introspective look at what it takes to be human. History is the story of an alien from the planet of Hondo visiting earth with the intentions of conquest, until he falls in love with music. Becoming a musician himself, History looks at how the planet of Hondo responds to his treason. Starring nobody of great note, The History of Future Folk is a simple story told with an almost no budget to speak of.

As I Lay Dying - Review

A movie written, directed by and starring James Franco, what could possibly go wrong? This movie is an adaptation of the William Faulkner novel of the same name published in 1930 about the death of a family's matriarch in the southern United States. As I Lay Dying also stars Tim Blake Nelson and Danny McBride which rounds out a pretty unique cast.

A Late Quartet - Review

A Late Quartet art

A movie that inexplicably flew under the radar, A Late Quartet is a drama about old friends and the tensions they still face after countless years. Philip Seymour Hoffman, in what would end up being one of his final roles, helps bolster a top-notch cast that also includes Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener. On paper this is a movie that you would have to be a fool to miss.
